You’re not asleep, but you’re not awake either. What’s the word for that mysterious feeling?

A hypnic jerk is someone you wouldn’t want to share a cab with, right? Actually, it is a feeling that many of us experience nightly.

In “Inception” the dream travelers move from dream to dream via a “kick,” which is like a hypnic jerk. Sleep starts, night starts, or hypnagogic jerks are also names for the feeling of an involuntary myoclonic twitch that happens just as we’re beginning to fall asleep. Myoclonus is when our muscles move suddenly, without any rhythm or pattern. (Find out if the word “inception” actually has anything to do with dreaming, right here.)

Hypnnic jerks happen during hypnagogia, which is a state that occurs between sleep and being fully awake. Some of history’s great thinkers and writers, including Aristotle, and in more recent times, Edgar Allan Poe, have pondered hypnagogia.

Hypnagogic is related to drowsiness, which we often feel profoundly when we are on the brink of sleep. The word drowsy comes from the Old English drusan or drusian, which means “sink” and “to become low, slow, or inactive.”

Interested in more thoughts on sleep and dreams? Read our post in which we discuss oneiromancy, the practice of predicting the future through the interpretation of dreams.

Had any dreams with words in them recently? Those are called hypnagogic images. Share them, and perhaps you can gain some insight from the collective wisdom of your fellow readers.

SMILE. :)

yan. maraming nagtatanung kung bkt daw npka masayahin ko. bkt daw palangiti ako. uh... Actually, there are so many reasons to smile. My family who is always there to guide me and my friends who is actually always make my day complete. nagkakarun daw ba ko nang problema? dagdag pa. NAMAN! lahat nang tao me problema. But if you will learn how to deal with it appropriately, I'm sure matututunan mo rin ngumiti. huwag mong masyadung pasanin ang mundo. Always think na me mga taong naiispired kpg nakikita ang bawat ngiti sa labi mo (NAKS!). pero tutoo. Katulad nang palagi kong sinasabi, "Every person has an Impact to another" (by Patch Adams) In every single moves, nkaka'apekto ka nang ibang tao. even if it's in a small way or in a big way. I might say also that smiling is my simple way to say that I am approachable and generous. so why don't smile?! SMILE! always make this world happy and colorful with your simple but meaningful SMILE. :)

Exercise Fights Cancer

Cancer patients looking to tackle their illness head-on are turning to exercise in droves. Regular workouts help to reduce the fatigue and nausea associated with chemotherapy; increase appetite; improve muscle tone and stamina; and reduce the pain of cancer thanks to the release of endorphins – opiate-like painkilling chemicals. Then there is the staggering effect exercise has on long-term recovery. The Journal of Clinical Oncology reports even modest amounts increase survival by 50-60%, with the strongest evidence currently for breast and colorectal cancers. “Five years ago, oncologists were divided, some believing exercise was downright dangerous for cancer patients,” says Professor Rob Newton of Edith Cowan University in Western Australia, a leading researcher in the field. The evidence that exercise is safe is now so strong that “the thinking has changed markedly”, says Newton. “Many oncologists now believe exercise is absolutely necessary for a patient’s recovery.”
